I've been not so quietly lobbying for us to read, for September, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the Pulitzer Prize Winner of 2007. It's getting rave reviews for being sweet, funny, and tragic, plus I'm a sucker for family sagas.
The title character is a sweet but overweight "GhettoNerd" living in New Jersey with his mother and sister who's obsessed with D&D, anime, and comics. He dreams of becoming the next J.R.R. Tolkien and experiencing his first kiss and/or losing his virginity but the 'fuku', a curse that has haunted his Dominican-American family for generations, stands in the way. It is also the story of Oscar's grandfather, who lived under the brutal reign of Trujillo, while shifting back and forth in time and narration.
If you are not convinced, then I'm all set to bribe you with homemade baked goods.
The paperback will be released on September 2nd but there are plenty of used hardbacks at half.com.

Well I'm good with the 24th, and whatever book everyone wants to read. I'm actually really enjoying 'Return of the Native' too. What I'm not enjoying is the tragic news that bleeping Warner Brothers is pushing back the release of the next Harry Potter film until NEXT SUMMER. And not even memorial Day, but July. JULY!? GAHHHHH!!! I hate them. And why is it delayed? Because next summer is gonna suck so bad because of this year's writer's strike, so they needed a surefire money maker. Because after The Dark Knight, they're like, broke, right? I'm really sad about this.
I can't see any other reason for them to do that unless it was financial, which totally sucks- especially after releasing that great teaser trailer. At least this will give me time to finish the series!
hi marcus, thanks for suggesting the book about a comic book geek. and the 24th will be fine for me. as for harry potter, i don't know if this is true or not, but i heard that it was delayed because they didn't want it coming out at the same time as daniel radcliffe was staring naked in equis on broadway, but that sounds more like a cover for some other reason. although i don't think the money thing would be the issue, since it is done by the same studio that did the dark knight. maybe they wanted to spread their profits since this year is obviously going to already be profitable.
Hey, I picked that one out! Marcus won't be coming to the get together because he's in Connecticut with Laura until the 25th.
I thought Radcliffe did that play last year. I'm sure there are pictures out of him is all his nude glory.
I'll be there on the 24th, but I will not have read the book. just couldn't convince myself to take it on. i'm just finishing up the age of innocence which took me 2 weeks to get past the first 3 chapters. I finally made it past that point and it has picked up significantly although not nearly as tawdry as i would like.
if we need another suggestion for sept's book besides mary's (which i would read) i suggest the enchantress of florence by salman rushdie. i just ordered it and will read it this month regardless, but just thought i'd throw it out as a thought - anyone ever read anything by mr. rushdie?
and don't get me started on the potter movie...although on a high note i did just pull a potter-geek move by pre-ordering the beedle and bard.
That sounds really good, Nicole, but it doesn't come out in paperback until Jan, 2009. Maybe we can go ahead and line up our picks for the rest of the year on Sunday. Everybody bring some suggestions!
don't make me bust out 'the reindeer people; living with animals and spirits in siberia' - i'm going to keep pushing that one...
I heard Harry Potter was delayed b/c George Lucas is all about making money.
I love Mary's book pick but will read anything Susan suggests on Sunday.
Reindeers taste like beef jerky
Question: Why did Salman Rush to Die?
